2026, and I'm still rocking VFX balls and color charts on set...
Attended the VES webinar "Introduction to VES On-Set VFX Data Collection and Usage Guide" yesterday in my brutal time zone (Bangkok), great push to standardize data capture.
New tech — 360 cameras spitting out 7k 11-exposure HDRIs in minutes, smart lenses with extended metadata, virtual production, gaussian splats... — layers, rather than replaces, over protocols we built over the last 30 years. On-set VFX supervision has turned into a long data menu you decide on during the pre-production shot breakdown.
Team dialogue beats everything though; on set, show up as VFX ambassador, not soldier.
The VES has made the guidelines accessible to non-members, very comprehensive and definitely worth the read: lnkd.in/efgCxEaz
